What are you birthing Dec 22?

What are you giving birth to?
What is your “gift to the Shift”?

Let the world know that the Birth event on December 22 represents an unstoppable global transformation. Remember that when you declare what you are birthing and then carry it out, we all move another step toward a peaceful and sustainable world.

The symbolic planetary Birth Day set for December 22 celebrates what’s working and what is true, good, and beautiful in the world already. But more important is this: The ongoing Birth 2012 campaign that culminates on December 20-22 will highlight those systemic changes in all sectors of society that are urgently needed now to create “a whole-system shift.”

Toward accelerating this Great Shift, what are you birthing?

hmmmmmm.

Today my answer to this is, I'm birthing more yoga and iRest for my military peeps! Spreading the love of yoga, peace, and helping others to be at ease with their mind and body. I'm birthing to be more economical by making homemade goods, face wash, laundry detergent...

Namaste.

More Info About the EventGlobal Mala - Salute To The New Dawn is a call to yoga practitioners worldwide for a global sunrise salutation that follows the rising sun across the planet. As the sun rises, yoga practitioners unite in practice as a commitment to embodying the positive energy of this new cycle. From dedicated solo practitioners to large groups, the global yoga community can connect to the auspicious energy of the first sunrise of the Solstice.

The end-date of the Maya calendar’s 5,125-year cycle on the December solstice of 2012 has become a major focal point for ideas about planetary change. While some may view this as a catastrophic end, fueled by economic, social and environmental crisis, a unique opportunity exists to harness this global attention into an event that celebrates the essential unity of humanity, and of all life.

Global Mala Project connect with Birth 2012 and UPLIFT 2012  to encourage yoga practitioners around the world to celebrate this rare moment and herald the birth of a new paradigm of consciousness by offering a yoga mala (18-108 cycles of Surya Namaskar in your own home, within your community or in a larger gathering.

108 coming up soon!

January 1st is fast approaching! You know what that means to us Yogis!!??? 108 Sun salutes to say bye bye, hello 2013!  I'll be leading a class this year (EEEEEK). Holistic Personal Training and Yoga in Jacksonville, NC at 3pm http://holisticpersonaltrainingandyogastudio.vpweb.com/?prefix=www
Here's what you have to look forward too...feeling amazing about yourself inside and out afterwards. Beign able to challenge yourself and have helpful yogi's around to guide you on your journey...and a nuturing environment!  We will have it set up to donate to a local charity. We will do 27 sun salutes in each direction North, South, East, and West. Here's some facts about doing 108 ~

108 sun salutations is the 5K of yoga—challenging enough to sound compelling but not completely daunting, offering up a sense of accomplishment, and often undertaken in the name of a good cause.

Why 108? It’s said there are 108 sacred parts in the body, which correspond to 108 sacred places on earth and the 108 Upanishads (philosophical texts that form the root of Hinduism), explained Litteston. Vedic mathematicians considered 108 to be a “number of the wholeness of existence,” according to Yoga Journal.

Sun salutations open and energise the entire body, and done with total awareness, bring more and more prana (life force) into the system.
In fact, the greatest obstacle to completing 108 rounds of sun salutations is not the body but the mind –

I'm so stinkin' excited! So holla at Debbie at the studio and sign up for the 108!

Class Plans too long?

Last Nights Hot Class

I am absolutely falling in love with my new studio and all the new yogi's at Holistic Personal Training and Yoga in Jville NC!!! Last nights class was incredible! 9 people packed in the small room, heated up, and flowing to the full moon's energy! And I like the all levels class...I'm use to that teaching my marines :) I enjoy giving people options to push themselves and work on where they are in this moment. and the "fluff" seems to be flowing out now like word vomit. Of course I still have my "lesson plans" and quotes in front of me, but the more and more I teach; the more and more the fluff just comes pouring out.. I am forever grateful to Kas and Moni at Porters Neck Yoga and Spa in Wilmington NC for the most awesome teacher training ever! Best decision ever! And I learn from my yogi's every time I teach! From my marines, my studio yogis', and even my co-workers at staff yoga! I feel blessed in my yoga bubble today :) much love

BiG Book of YOGA

I wonder if she reads my blogs? Probably not, not yet! :) I'm totally optamistic about the fact when we meet for the first time, face to face we will become long life friends! :) giggle giggle. As I sit in my office preparing for my yoga classes today, reading her BIG BOOK OF YOGA, and doing handstands against the wall...i wondered. Does she read my blogs...hmmmm. I envision after class we will stroll downtown Savannah and talk shop over a glass of vino...giggle. I wonder if she's done laughing yoga? I think that's what we need today...yep, laughing yoga is on the menu for today's classes! Let it all out and laugh! Laugh at yourself! Laugh out loud ~ Be so happy that when others look at you, they become happy too~

thanks Kathryn for inspiration and being my silent bff

My Orange Chakra

Today it was telling me to eat veggie pizza with oreos and milk...ahhhhhhh. Detox in order stat!!!!!
But which one is the best?! !??!

help this yogi!

A sneak peek to our Yoga classes...

Coming this month to Emerald Isle...YOGA!!! Everyday!!!! Check it out.. let me know what you think!

Yoga Class Descriptions:
Meditation, breathing techniques and relaxation will be part of our daily practice.  Always honor your bodies and listen to the inner teacher.  Modifications are available for all classes. The emphasis in our classes is not doing harder poses but rather to enjoy the process of opening ourselves to the challenges that yoga offers. Learn.Grow.Share.

BASIC/FUNDEMENTAL Introduction to yoga. No experience or flexibility required. Great for beginners or someone just getting back into yoga. Fundamentals of the practice are introduced at a therapeutic pace. We will be working with our breath, meditation, postures, proper alignment, and stretching using a wide variety of props (blankets, bolsters, straps, and pillows). This class will introduce you to deep breathing & relaxation techniques, basic standing and seated poses, and balance.

GENTLE No experience or flexibility required. This is a much slower paced class designed to relax into the postures while stretching core muscles. Great for healing injuries and aching bones. The intent of this class is to nourish the experience of yoga in order to enrich our daily lives.

ALL LEVELS FLOW All about movement with our breath. Flowing into postures naturally from one to the other. A vinyasa based class with: Sun salutations, standing postures, balances, partner work….modifications and props are used throughout this class.

RESTORATIVE & iREST (R&R)            Supported with bolsters, blankets, pillows…designed to promote deep relaxation and a healing experience. Light Thai yoga massage maybe included. At the end, a guided meditation is used to help deepen your practice within yourself.

POWER HOUR            This is a challenging class with several styles of yoga. Just like the name says - Power Hour. One fun filled hour of intense exercise to make you work your core and build strength in your upper and lower body. Advanced postures of practice will be introduced.

LEVEL 2 Designed for students with a pre existing yoga practice who wish to travel deeper.  This is an intermediate level Hatha Yoga Class: Asana, Pranayama, Dhyana, and Savasana. The Asanas/poses are challenging and vigorous. Progressive skills and strength will move us toward arm balancing, headstand, and deep hip openers.
THAI The art of touch ~ Thai yoga massage. Thai yoga teaches us how to connect to our breath, how to touch with intention, how to open our energy, and expand. This class is sometimes referred to as “yummy yoga” and has been known to increase joy in the body. Thai offers you a way to find more range of motion and a deeper understanding of your body and daily habits.
SUP Stand Up Paddleboard Yoga. We practice a flow series on the SUP. Anywhere from 1.5-2 hours. This class includes: warming up, Sun Salutations, and a chance to try what you want with the help/assistance by your experienced instructors.
BEACH  Either Sunrise or Sunset classes are offered. This class will be designed around those who show for class. This could be a day where you want/need to relax and enjoy some gentle yoga on the beach or feel the need to work out the stress with a power hour session.
PARTNER Bring a friend, sister, brother, mother, father, cousin, boyfriend, girlfriend, wife, husband, daughter, son…This is absolutely the best way to spend time together; enjoying each other’s company while learning to use yoga techniques as a pair. Partner Yoga includes some Thai, balancing, and flying poses! It’s so much fun to learn to use your body to help others enrich their yoga practice. And makes for a great date night J
HOT Classes are held in a room that is heated up to 105 degrees. Practicing in the heat helps open the muscular/skeletal system and eliminate toxins. Be prepared to sweat.
ROCK VINYASA/FUNKY FLOW Not your typical yoga class. This is a Rockin’ class with Rockin’ music to help free our soul and bring joy into the bodies with our movement. Feel free to sing along in class while we flow, dance, and move. All Levels welcomed!
CHAIR Yep! Yoga done in a chair! Great for learning techniques to do in the office, if the floor is too hard, some days it’s nearly impossible to get down onto the floor and back up again. Chair Yoga is a wonderful alternative to the floor practice and still giving you all the benefits of traditional yoga.
LAUGHING 10 minutes between our Friday evening classes of laughter! If you’ve never heard of it or experienced Laughing Yoga, come give it a try – it’s FREE! Stay after class, come early, or just come for the 10 minutes of this incredible stress reducing laughter yoga! Bah ha ha
Namaste.

How to deal with Mean People

How to Deal With Mean People in Your Life

This weekend I had a very frustrating incident. As I was getting into a taxi, the driver got distracted and started driving off without checking if I had closed the door. Can you imagine my shock when I had one leg inside the car and the car suddenly started moving? I literally jumped inside, but my ankle still got caught in the door. Besides an ugly bruise I got a piece of the driver’s mind about how long it takes for SOME people to get into a car. No “I’m sorry!” No “Are you ok?” Nothing! I am usually good at controlling my temper, but this time all I could think of was how much I want to smack this rude man and give him a piece of my mind about his manners.

Do you often let a rude taxi driver, an uncaring boss, an insensitive co-worker or an arrogant stranger ruin your day? Have you ever wondered why sometimes people purposely say or do mean things?

I could come up with 4 main reasons:

a) They try to overcompensate for their hurt Ego. Someone has hurt them in the past when they felt especially vulnerable and now they are trying to regain their power and self-confidence by hurting you.

b) They secretly fear that they have the same quality that they are making fun of. For example, if a person makes derogatory remarks about someone being overweight, they are most likely insecure about their own body and are afraid that people will notice it too.

c) They are deeply attached to their sufferings and failures. As weird as it may seem, many people refuse to let go of their negativity, because it brings some drama into their life and gives them something to worry about.

d) They crave attention and love. Just like teenagers when reaching a difficult age act out of spite to prove their own independence, adults defy social norms to get attention and a strong emotion out of you (even if it is a negative emotion).

How do you respond to mean people?
I have noticed that there are two spontaneous reactions when it comes to dealing with negative people 1) we get mean and rude back or 2) we let them run all over us while boiling inside with righteous indignation. Neither of these options seems particularly attractive.

In fact there is a better way to deal with mean people – do not let them get to you.
There is a great story on this topic:

One day a man came up to Buddha and spat in his face. Buddha, slowly wiped of the spit with his shawl and asked, “Do you have anything more to say?” The man was not ready for this question, and ashamed he ran away.
That night the man could not get to sleep, because he realized that he had actually offended an enlightened person. The next morning he came back and fell in front of Buddha on his knees. Again Buddha looked at him and asked, “Do you have anything else to say”. The man was completely puzzled, “Yesterday I offended you and you didn’t get mad, today I am begging for your forgiveness and you are not happy. Why?!” Buddha looked at him with his peaceful smile and said, “Because I am not your Slave”.

You can not enter a lake filled with silt and dirty water and come out clean. When you let mean people drag you down to their level, they start to control your actions and their negativity rubs off on to you.
Think of mean people as huge garbage trucks. They are full of anger, frustration, hatred, disappointments and negativity. When that garbage starts to pile up, they feel the need to dump it on someone else (preferably someone who is in a good mood). If you have been chosen as a dump spot, do not allow them to run over you and do not spread this negativity onto other people.
Refuse to take all angry or offensive comments close to heart. Just smile and wish those people well, because they are the ones who deserve compassion more than anyone else. After all they carry tons of emotional garbage with them 24/7.
I do not like to use the phrase “kill them with kindness”, because it sounds vindictive. If behind your bright smile lays an attempt to provoke the person even further, then you are no better than he/she is. If you can not be truly kind to someone who is being mean to you, polite indifference will do just fine.
Remember, you do not have to attend every argument that you are invited to. Just say, “No, thanks” and move on to something that brings you joy and distracts your mind from indulging in negative emotions. You can pray, think of your favorite quote, sing a song in your head or just recall a funny story from your past. For example, when I feel irritated I usually repeat my positivity “mantra”. That is the only reason why one infamous taxi driver did not get yelled at.

Thanks for the article Mom...I needed this today.

Namaste.

I never get thru a whole sequence

Maybe it's because I plan too much? idk, but I never seem to touch on everything I had planned. Sometimes due to the size of the class, or the partner work takes a lil longer, or the injuries that day..whatever it is I never ever seem to get thru a whole sequence...so I've started doing part 1 and part 2 classes lol...Here's an example..now granted, maybe if I had 2 hours instead of one and a half I could have done it...or maybe by myself...This is from a class I taught with my marines and sailors in my Level 2 class 18APR12:

Sukhasana - 5 mins
Stretch side to side, out in front
Dandasana & Pascimottansasana
Janu Sirsasana with twist too
Table Top - Cat/Cow
    - Thread the needle
    - Spinal Balance with abs
    - into 3 legged Dog
    - into 2 legged Dog
Balasana up to Down Dog to Tadasana

Warm Up Flow: Uttanasana, Malasana Variation (squat with feet together arms out in front), Uttanasana  - 3x

Vrksasana

War 1 Flow/ Sun Sals: Utkatasana, Uttanasana, Plank, Bhujangasana, Down Dog, War 1, Uttanasana, Uktatasana, Tadasana. Repeat other side.

High Lunge Twist Flow: Parivrita Parsvakonasana x2

Flow with Step over side Vasisthasana variation x 2

Bakasana Flow..from a Sun Sal aka "yoga push up"

Wide leg forward bend - stretch shoulders over head

Utthita Parsvakonasana - Ardha Chandrasana with block, repeat other side.

Utthita Parsvakonasana Bind on both sides.

**Bird of Paradise** or Dolphin push ups on wall into head/hand stand - Sirsasana

Ardha Matsyendrasana

Roll onto your backs...cool down...

Savasana

Yeah that's a lot...I'll try again next week

i wish

Oh, how I wish I could record and video my classes and take pictures of my wonderful yogi patients/students/kids...I call them my kids, but technically they are my patients. They are the most wonderful, beautiful group of people. And I feel very blessed and thankful I get to be apart of their yoga journey! It's a joy to come to work and teach to such a dynamic group. A group of misfits, injured, depressed, anxious, insomniac, borderline, and pd. I wouldn't trade it in for the world! I love touching the lives of our young men and women serving our country here or there, and fighting their own internal fight with sanity. I love it. I love watching them try new things, succeeding, and to see their faces when they realize they just touched their toes for the first time EVER!!! I am blessed. It brings tears of joy to my eyes.

They other day we did a tree circle!! in our beginners class at that! These people are fearless! They make me smile and they make me want to plan classes for THEM, around their injuries, they make me laugh too:) I look forward everyday i get to teach...wish it was everyday. They inspire me to be a better yogi. and my "level 2 class"...words can't describe the unconditional love I have for each and every one of them...they have been with me for 5-6 months or longer..they have grown, blossomed, relapsed, got back up. They are part of my yoga family now and will always be. I mean when a room full of marines and sailors all do bird of paradise...it's takes your breath away. Again, I wish I could capture this for the world to see. For you to see. to make a scrap book of my wonderful Yogi Service Members. It's funny too, because they make me want to not call in sick the days I see them...the days I know they are depending on me...on ME to be there for them...to nurture their yoga growth. to laugh. to teach. to laugh at myself:)

After my iRest sessions today and reading through all their notes...I'm so thankful I get to teach in this population!! I love this population. I maybe a tree-huggin, no shoe wearing hippy, but I love love love my Military Yogis!!! Reading through their moods today before and after class really lit me up, and made my heart warm and radiant, full of joy. Here are some before and after "moods" during iRest:
Good -------------------- Relaxed and Rested
Anxious, nervous-------thankful
ok-------------------------feeling relaxed and calm
ok-------------------------good and open
ok-------------------------very relaxed, tired, calm - look forward to doing all the classes, I like it a lot
Angry----------------------Happy :)
Irritated-------------------Relaxed
depressed------------------Relaxed

And these are just a few from today!!! iRest and Yoga are healing!!

Just wanted to share part of my teaching journey with all of you. so blessed

My Kids (aka students) Rock

I am so freakin' proud of my kids (students/patients)! Yesterday we had a pretty full class again..10 people. THe energy was alive and kicking. No major physical injuries, and everyone was feeling good...so we kicked it up a notch. We warmed up, did some Sun Sals, then started doing this awesome sequence of asanas...I had out my Meza book of sequencing...but didn't even use it. We did a ton of ab work for our solar chakra from boat to table with ab crunches. Then I was feeling frisky and we all tried the 3 leg table to down dog. First with one leg, then with one leg and one arm pushing up from table to down dog!! Everyone tried it, a few toppled over. It was awesome though! Ok so the sequence if I can remember went something like this: War 2, triangle, extended side angle, goddess, reverse other side. then war 2, extended side angle bind* - other side. Feeling even more frisky at this point because every single one of my kids got the bind!!! ON BOTH SIDES!!! I told them how it took me forever to get my right side!! I was a proud mommy bear!

After that I asked them to find a partner to help spot on this next one we were all going to attempt. I demonstrated Bird of Paradise. Emphasizing the slow and steady approach..go with the breath. take your time, focal point, bend the knees...So, everyone tried it AND GOT IT!! HOLY COW BATMAN! I told them they were all freakin' ROCKSTARS!!! we did both sides, then forward bends. 5 minutes of free style from head stands to tree to "yoga pushups"..then savasana..it was an Amazing practice. I wish I could have captured a picture of my 10 Marine Yogis doing Bird of Paradise...It will forever be with me. They all are amazing people. I am so blessed to have the privilege to be their yoga teacher.
